400x diode?

This is a noob question: what is a 400x diode? I understand diode, but am not familiar with the '400x' I see in the RBBB instructions.

It's any diode in the 1N4000 series. IE: 1N4001, 1N4002, 1N4003, 1N4004, etc. The only difference between these diodes is their reverse voltage rating. The lower numbers have a lower rating. You would expect the lower rated 1N4002 to be less expensive than the higher rated 1N4004, but that is frequently not the case since the 1N4004's are manufactured in larger quantities.
