USB BUB 1 - is it compatible with FTDI Friend pinout?

Post by scottInNH » Wed Aug 22, 2012 9:25 am

Hello,

I don't often use FTDI, so please excuse my ignorance. :-)

I have a Modern Device USB BUB #1, and wish to use it to use it to program an Mintronics/Adafruit Menta.

The FTDI Friend's ports are labeled: GND, CTS, VCC, TX, RX, RTS - http://www.adafruit.com/products/284
The USB-BUB 1 ports are labeled: GND, 3.3v, 5v, TX, RX, DTR and on the other side there are also "RTS" and "CTS" - http://shop.moderndevice.com/products/usb-bub
... (For more detail, I tried asking about it here: http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.ph ... 87#p160487 )

Is it just as simple as making a 6-wire cable tapping into the BUB's socket for GND, CTS (off to the side of the BUB), 5V (or 3.3v), TX, RX, and RTS (off to the side of the BUB) and voila I have the same exact outputs as the FTDI Friend? Anything else to watch out for? Note: While it looks like the BUB was made to support reconfiguration, I don't wish to permanently modify it.

Thanks!

The line marked 3.3V does not go through to the header on the BUB I - so use a meter to see where it's live if you plan to use 3.3V
You'll need to connect the CTS line to pin 2 (of your alt header) Other than that - connect the pins and you're ready to go. Since the 3.3V line is not connected at the header you could also just connect the CTS line at the "main" header and you'd also be ready to go, with a lot less wiring.

The CTS line isn't used for much with Arduino environment but it can be used to see if a board is plugged in.

FWIW - I forgot to hook up CTS on the BUB II (but intended to) the label is on the pin but it isn't connected.

Hope that helps,

Paul

That is awesomely helpful, Paul. Thanks. Last thing I needed to do was purchase another interface cable.
